Understanding and Supporting Menopause in the Workplace: Insights from MPower by Enable

At MPower by Enable, we are excited to share the latest insights from our Client Impact Report, covering February to June 2024. We recognise the unique challenges faced by individuals experiencing menopause while managing their careers. Many employees report that menopausal symptoms significantly affect their job performance, underscoring the urgent need for adequate workplace support. 

Empowering Through Personalised Coaching 

Our mission is to empower those affected by menopausal symptoms through personalised, one-on-one health coaching sessions. These bespoke sessions aim to enhance wellbeing, reduce feelings of isolation, and promote self-management. By doing so, clients can actively participate in their care and achieve their self-identified goals. 

Key Findings from Our Report 

Improvement in Overall Wellbeing 

  • 42% of clients reported an increase in overall wellbeing after receiving one-on-one support. 
  • Clients’ top concerns included weight gain, mental wellbeing, brain fog, and sleep issues. After six hours of dedicated coaching, clients saw a notable reduction in the severity of these concerns. 

Enhanced Coping Mechanisms 

  • Problem-focused coping increased by 28.4%, indicating strengthened psychological resilience. 
  • Emotion-focused coping rose by 4.5%, reflecting improved emotional regulation during stressful situations. 
  • Avoidance-focused coping decreased by 29.2%, suggesting more adaptive coping strategies. 

The Impact of Menopause 

Before starting support, clients self-identified physical or mental symptoms they were experiencing, averaging 13 symptoms per client. The most common symptoms included: 

  • Difficulty sleeping (88% of clients) 
  • Muscle and joint pains (88% of clients) 

The main reasons clients sought our support were: 

  • Diet and nutrition support 
  • Developing coping mechanisms for symptoms 
  • Weight management support 

Client Satisfaction 

  • 100% of clients achieved their desired outcomes through our support. 
  • 100% reported improved management of menopause symptoms in the workplace. 
  • 100% would recommend our services to colleagues, family, or friends. 
  • 67% felt more confident discussing menopause with their line manager or HR department.

Support from employers, managers, and colleagues can significantly alleviate the negative impacts of menopause symptoms: 

  • 84% of unsupported employees report negative impacts, compared to 71% of those who feel supported by their employer or manager. 
  • Colleague support also plays a crucial role, with 82% of unsupported employees feeling negative impacts versus 72% of those supported. 

Effective support strategies include fostering a healthy workplace culture, having peers of a similar age who share experiences, and providing training and counselling, such as one-on-one menopause coaching. 

Supporting menopausal employees is not just about compliance; it’s about creating an inclusive, supportive, and productive work environment. By understanding and addressing the unique challenges of menopause, HR teams and employers can foster a workplace where all employees can thrive.
