MPower by Enable transforms the menopause experience through holistic personalised coaching and peer Support

Last week NICE (National Institute for Care and Excellence) guidelines were updated; Menopause – Diagnosis and Management published in 2015 was a significant turning point in raising awareness of the importance of menopause and in providing direction in management. After eight years the update is very much welcomed.

The updated draft guidelines published on November 17th recommend wider treatment options for managing menopause symptoms as well as enabling a broadened understanding of the risks and benefits of HRT so anyone going through menopause can choose the best care to suit them.

The NICE guidelines acknowledge the need for a personalised approach, more treatment options and choice; clinical studies have recognized for some time that CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is ‘helpful in reducing the impact of hot flushes and night sweats’ and according to NICE, ‘new evidence shows that CBT can help reduce menopause symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, depressive symptoms and problems sleeping’.*

These are certainly issues that many of our MPower by Enable clients experience and are looking for support with; our approach not only utilises talking as a beneficial tool but also other non-medical modalities like nutrition, exercise, and looking at sleep, purpose and connection.

MPower’s personalised coaching and peer support service has evidenced a clear pathway to transform the experiencing of people going through and working with the menopause. Through its 1 to 1 coaching and peer group sessions delivered by Menopause Health Coaches it has demonstrated its success in improving psycho-emotional wellbeing, reducing feelings of isolation and equipping participants in self-management so they can be more active in their own care and minimise the disruption the menopause causes their lives and work.

This bespoke approach means participants receive personalised, specialist care for their individual menopausal concerns. Participants in our pilot reported that these as well as the group sessions helped them talk about the impact of their symptoms and make it easier to cope.

One of our clients stated: “I have a stronger awareness of my needs and how to differentiate between real symptoms of menopause. She has built my confidence.”

Another client said: “The Menopause Health Coach listened, I was not judged and recognised that I am not the only one going through this. Talking with someone who fully understood took away the feeling of there being something wrong with me and the feeling of not being normal.”

An overwhelming 75% clients find it easier to discuss menopausal symptoms with line managers of human resources departments after finishing the programme while 81% find the coaching increased their confidence to discuss symptoms with a GP.

One client said: “It’s given me back me! A sense that I can exert more control of managing my symptoms and how I’m feeling as I go through the change. Other ways to look at and manage symptoms. Its helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Our knowledge and our data shows us that opening the conversation to other holistic methods works. Starting with CBT is a step in the right direction of a broader picture, as menopause is not a one size fits all solution but we do know that MPower by Enable sessions found to successfully reduce the severity of menopause symptoms (regardless of participants’ menopausal stage.)

MPower by Enable’s success in fostering confidence, communication, and symptom management only highlights the significance of empowering people through talking therapies combined with other medical and non-medical methods during this transitional period in their life, and by continuing to champion the discussion around menopause in the workplace and outside of it.
